Gospel according to Saint Matthew 16, 13-19
At that time, when Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he put this question to his disciples: “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” They answered him: “Some say John the Baptist; others, Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” Then he asked them: “But you, who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter answered and said to him: “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Then Jesus said to him: “Blessed are you, Simon son of John, for this has not been revealed to you by man, but by my Father who is in heaven. And I say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church. The powers of hell will not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
Reflection
“And you, who do you say that I am?” (Mt 16:15) ✨
Jesus doesn't just ask to know what is said about Him, but to discover what place He occupies in our hearts. Peter responds with faith: "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." This confession is the rock upon which the Church is built, and it is also the foundation upon which we can build our personal lives.
Today, on the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, we can ask ourselves: Do I recognize Jesus as my firm rock and guide of my life? If Peter's response was not a revelation from man but from the Father (), let us also ask for that grace today: that the Father may enlighten us to treasure Jesus in the depths of our being and proclaim him with courage.
🕊️ Lord, strengthen my faith so that, like Peter and Paul, I can say to you from the bottom of my heart: “You are my Lord and my guide.”
